Every day, we see companies rushing to add "AI-powered" to their product descriptions. Sometimes, it's a meaningful shift. More often, it's a marketing tactic. And the difference matters more than people realize. In truth, slapping AI onto a product without clearly identifying the problem it's meant to solve is a recipe for complexity, confusion, and missed opportunity.

There's nothing inherently wrong with excitement around emerging technology. But when hype takes the wheel, it can derail the real purpose of innovation: to create something that makes people's lives easier, better, or more meaningful.
As an engineering leader, I believe the most transformative use cases for AI will come from those who stay focused on solving core problems—for their teams, their customers, and their communities. The best implementations aren't always flashy. They're smart, deeply integrated, and focused on outcomes.
Take AI chatbots, for example. They can be incredibly useful in the right context: surfacing buried content, assisting users with natural language questions, or delivering tailored recommendations in real time. But if your platform is already intuitive and your users rarely struggle to find what they need, is an AI chatbot really worth building?
On the other hand, if you know your users face friction—say, they're overwhelmed by documentation or don't know what action to take next—AI might offer a highly relevant solution. A well-trained model that guides people to the right information, at the right time, with context? That's more than just a chatbot. It's a high-impact feature that can improve user experience.
The key is to start with the problem, not the tool.

Let's be real: AI doesn't "think." It predicts. It simulates. It follows patterns. That's valuable—but it's not the same as reasoning or understanding. A model can summarize 1,000 documents in a second, but it can't intuit how a person feels reading those documents. It can spot a statistical anomaly, but it won't understand why a particular community might interpret a message differently based on cultural context or historical experience.
That's where humans come in. Our role isn't to compete with AI, but to guide it.
At its best, AI is a second brain. it helps us scale what we know and frees us to focus on what matters most. But it's on us, especially those of us building these systems, to ensure we're not blindly automating what we've always done. We need to ask: What are we enabling? What are we ignoring? And how can we use these tools to expand what's possible, not just accelerate what exists?
Getting care right is too important for gimmicks. Patients, providers, and researchers rely on systems that must be accurate, empathetic, and accountable. This is especially pertinent when working with historically underrepresented populations. If your AI misclassifies or miscommunicates in these contexts, the fallout is both technical and personal.
That's why we hold ourselves to a higher standard. AI in healthcare has to go beyond utility. It has to earn trust.
Earning that trust means being transparent about how AI is trained and tested. It means designing for inclusivity from the start, not as an afterthought. And it means making sure AI augments human decision-making, rather than obscuring it.
